Pinewood Derby is probably the event most commonly associated with Cub Scouting. If you were a Cub Scout, you probably remember making a car with your family and racing it! Here are some resources for first time families and veterans alike on making race day a success.
Most importantly, read and review the Pack 405 Pinewood Derby Rules. No one wants to be told at check-in that their car isn't eligible to race. You might see tips and tricks online for a speedier car that our race doesn't allow. Our rules are designed to maintain a healthy competition spirit, but also be in line with District and Council rules if someone wanted to participate in those races as well.
Pinewood Derby is a gravity powered race. The switch is pulled and the cars start down the ramp. To make it to the end, a fast cars needs weight, the right center of gravity, and to reduce as much friction as possible. The difference between winning cars can be the difference of a few hundredths of a second! Searching YouTube for fast car tips will bring back a lot of great ideas, but make sure those ideas are permitted by our Pack rules.
Aside from speed, we love to see creative cars! Pinterest and Image searches will come up with all kinds of off the wall ideas. We have our Cubs vote on the most creative car, and there is a Best in Show award for one that garners the most votes. The Scout Shop also has some fun stickers, light kits, sound kits, colorful wheels and more that are all permitted for use!
Open Division
The Open Division is designed for siblings, parents, older Scouts, and friends who also would like to make a car. Open division cars must also follow the same rules, but will run in a set of heats on their own. Additional car kits are available from the Pack for $7, or can be purchased at the Scout Shop or online. All racers MUST start with an official kit from Scouting America.
